Features of Google Analytics

Features of Google Analytics

Google Analytics is packed with useful features to help you learn about your website’s performance and help you achieve your business goals. Here are a few of the most useful:

Track visitor information

Google Analytics tracks page views, unique visitors, bounce rates, and conversions of everyone who visits your website. This information is invaluable for making targeted improvements to your web content.

Set goals

Setting up particular goals in Google Analytics, such as completing a purchase or subscribing to a newsletter, allows you to track the progress of your campaign. You can then keep tabs on your progress and make adjustments as necessary to achieve better results.

View demographic data

Data on your website visitors, such as their age, gender, location, and interests, can be gleaned through Google Analytics’ ‘Audience Insights’ feature. This information can help you design marketing campaigns that specifically cater to your target market.

Create custom reports

It is possible to create custom reports in Google Analytics so that you can view only the information that is most relevant to you.

With these powerful features, you will better understand the people who interact with your website. And armed with this data, you can optimize your website for maximum impact.

How to Use Google Analytics

How to Use Google Analytics

There are many different ways to use Google Analytics, but we’ll focus on five key ways marketers can benefit from the tool.

1. Identify your most popular content

One of the most important things you can do with Google Analytics is to identify your most popular content. This will help you understand what kinds of content resonate with your audience and where you should focus your energies in the future.

To find your most popular content, go to Behavior > Site Content > All Pages. Here, you’ll see a list of all the pages on your website, ranked by how many views they’ve received.

You can also use this data to understand which types of content are most popular on your site. For example, if you notice that blog posts tend to get more views than other types of pages, you may want to focus on creating more blog content in the future.

2. Understand how people find your website

Another important use for Google Analytics is understanding how people find your website. You can find this data under the Acquisition tab.

There are three main ways that people can find your website: through organic searches, direct traffic, or referrals.

Organic search traffic is when someone finds your website by typing a query into a search engine like Google or Bing. Direct traffic is when someone visits your website by typing your URL directly into their browser. And referral traffic is when someone clicks on a link from another website that leads to yours.

It’s important to understand the mix of traffic that your website receives so that you can focus your marketing efforts accordingly. For example, if you notice that a large percentage of your traffic comes from referrals, you may want to focus on building more backlinks to your site.

3. See which marketing campaigns are driving results

If you’re running any kind of marketing campaign (such as an email marketing campaign or a social media campaign), it’s helpful to track its performance in Google Analytics. This way, you can see which campaigns are driving results and adjust your strategy accordingly.

To track the performance of a marketing campaign, you’ll need to add parameters to the campaign’s URL. These parameters will tell Google Analytics which campaign the traffic came from.

For example, the following parameters each tell Google Analytics something different about web traffic:

  • utm_source=facebook (the traffic came from Facebook)
  • utm_medium=social (it was driven by a social media post)
  • utm_campaign=spring_sale (it’s part of the spring sale campaign)

Once you’ve added parameters to your URLs, you can see how much traffic each campaign is driving by going to Acquisition > Campaigns.

4. Get insights into customer behavior

Google Analytics can also be used to gain insight into customer behavior. This data can be found under the Behavior tab.

There are a few key reports that can be particularly helpful for marketers, including the following:

  • Site Content: This report shows you which pages on your site are being visited most often. It can be helpful for understanding which types of content are most popular with your audience.
  • Landing Pages: This report shows which pages people are landing on when they first visit your site. It can be helpful for understanding which pages are most effective at driving conversions.
  • Exit Pages: This report shows you which pages people are exiting your site from. It can be helpful for understanding which pages need to be improved so that people are more likely to stay on your site.

5. Set up goals to track conversions

One of the most important uses for Google Analytics is tracking conversions. A conversion is a goal you’ve set for your website, such as a sale, sign-up, or download.

If you want to track conversions in Google Analytics, you’ll first need to set up goals. To do this, go to Admin > View Settings and click on the Goals tab. From there you can add new goals and specify the criteria that count as a conversion.

Once you’ve set up your goals, you can track their performance by going to Conversions > Goals. Here, you can see how many conversions each goal has generated, as well as the conversion rate for each goal.
